Video Edits:
One of the first changes to be implemented is the elimination of condition codes for video edits (CalTPA Condition Codes B2A–F). This means candidates are now permitted to submit edited videos, with the understanding that if edits interfere with an assessor's ability to accurately score the submission, the assessment may be scored at a level 1.
Commission staff would like to offer some clarifications regarding video edits:
- The expectation is that video edits will be made only to ensure all components of a lesson are included within the time limit. (For example, in Cycle 1, a candidate needs to meet the requirements for Clip 1 Creating a Positive and Safe Learning Environment and Establishing Expectations for Content-Specific Learning in a video that lasts no more than 5 minutes. If necessary to demonstrate that they establish both a positive learning environment and learning expectations for the content of the lesson, the candidate may edit those two sections of their lesson into one continuous clip.)
- Edits should be minimal.
-
Edits should not distract from the lesson (e.g., background effects or added titles that distract from the assessor's ability to view the required evidence should not be added).
- Edits must not interfere with the meaning, viewing, or sound quality of the video clip.
The following types of edits may not result in a condition code; however, they are strongly discouraged.
-
Adding flashy titles, animations, or special effects
-
Inserting background music or sound effects
- Using scrolling text, added commentary, or artificial transitions
Updated Condition Codes:
In addition to the shift to allow video edits, Commission staff have worked to reduce the number of condition codes issued to candidates, with a request to assessors that they score the evidence submitted. In some cases, this may result in a submission receiving a score of 1 on a rubric if the evidence is not present in a candidate's submission.
For CalTPA, codes will still be issued for the following:
-
California Content Standards, English Language Development Standards, and/or Curriculum Frameworks not used/not referenced (A6/A8)
-
Content-specific learning goals and/or English Language Development goals not identified (A7/A9)
-
Audio or video files or uploaded documents are blank, unviewable, or unintelligible (B6–7, C1, D3–6)
-
3–5 video lessons not provided in Cycle 2 submission (D8)
-
Unrelated document uploaded in place of template (E6A–K)
- Annotations do not map onto video clips (G4)
Condition code A2 will continue to be issued if a candidate submits their CalTPA to the wrong content or credential area. However, individuals who receive an A2 condition code will receive a voucher code to include with a re-submission during the next scoring window. The voucher code will allow them to resubmit at no additional cost.
The changes outlined above are effective for any CalTPA submitted on or after March 28, 2025 and will be reflected in the May 1st or later score reports for all CalTPA credential areas.
